The word BALIMAKĀRYA is taken from the Old Balinese language dictionary, Kārya which translates to works related to prayer ceremonies; Makārya which translates to holding a ceremony. Literally, it can be interpreted as work that has spiritual value. Bali in this case means not only as a territorial unit in the administrative territory of the Province of Bali, nor a representation of the Balinese ethnic unity, but Bali is a representative of a ‘unity of senses’ of Indonesian nationality and citizens of the world. This is closely related to the period when this activity is taking place, entering the post-pandemic period of COVID-19, a right time for Bali (again as a ‘unity of senses’) to start moving creating works that are worthy of being dedicated to humanity and the environment.
Balima-Karya means bringing about a joint work that reflects the ‘communal work value’ (gotong royong) that produces a creation. Infused in the creations are the 5 characteristics of Budi Pekerti: Acceptance, Honesty, Patience, Introspection, Budi Luhur (high morality).
BALIMAKĀRYA is a series of activities in the form of art collaboration projects in five main fields such as Film, Music, Literatures, Theater, and Cultural Uniqueness held in Bali. Like the five phenomenal creations of the universe, namely the five human senses, five human fingers on each left and right hands and feet. And like the phenomenal work unearthed by the founding father of the Indonesian nation, Ir. Soekarno, which is Pantja-Sila: five basic principles that underlie the life of the Indonesian people in life (gronslag philosophy).
This idea was initiated by Tommy F. Awuy who carries the vision that creations should be oriented towards humanity, environment, and culture, with the aim of elevating the dignity of Indonesian people and all the people of the world, supported by a quality and healthy living environment.
So far, BALIMAKĀRYA series of projects that had taken place are BALIMAKĀRYA Short Film and Documentary Festival 2021, held in October 2021, presenting Indonesian film maestro, Garin Nugroho, as the Festival Steering Committee as well as the Jury. It was a collaboration initiated by Komunitas Purba with various parties, including: Rizoma Foundation, Kebon Vintage Cars & Museum, Focus Production, Ratu Restaurant, Dharma Negara Alaya, Particle Production, and Indo Business Law. The Festival concept, which was held during the pandemic, was carried out online by involving 484 film works from 25 provinces throughout Indonesia.
In line with that, we are going forward with the same idea by continuing to hold BALIMAKĀRYA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2022, initiated by Tommy F Awuy and Amalia Ahmad as a form of improving the quality of activities that had previously been successfully implemented nationally in 2021.
