It is not easy to hold a film festival. But it is harder still to maintain and improve it. There are myriads of people with variety of expertise involved in running the event.
The Second BaliMakãrya Film Festival offers various engaging activities such as film workshops, audio visual arts exhibition, and of course, films screenings.
BaliMakãrya Film Festival is a uniqye event as it focuses on South-East Asia as the core of the film program. The objective is to create a new center where new talents from South-East Asia as presented. This Festival would also show latest Indonesian films which were carefully curated and are ready to be screened for the first time. We hope that, with a number of international judges from prominent film institutions and producers, BaliMakãrya Film Festival would advance to a higher level.
Apart from film, the “Beyond Cinema” part will show collaborations of assorted art forms with film or as a response to films. Dance performances, poem forum, virtual exhibition, and graphics art/comic exhibition are offered. There is no other film festival that is presenting such variety of programs in Indonesia, even in South-East Asia.
BaliMakãrya Film Festival would not only try to engage international viewers and programs, but also make an approach to local wisdom by collaborating with local film community. We will hold sharing forum with local community, screen films created by them, and workshops as well as masterclass to enrich their experiences in participating in a film festival.
We are delighted to be able to have the participation of film directors and artists from all over the South-East Asia region to meet with local viewers, to have their interaction that we hope would bring synergy. It is our wish to have film as unifier of people and as a medium to share love for arts.
BaliMakãrya aims to be an inclusive event for people from all walks of life. This is a non-profit event that can be accessed by anybody. We are aware that the festival is quite new, yet we are strong in our conviction in getting more people to participate, more organization, community to collaborate with, and to advance together in creating Bali as a center for film in South-East Asia in the future.

I am welcoming the event of BaliMakãrya Film Festival that were born in Bali by artists from Bali and Jakarta.
This event is a pride of our nations, especially for Bali people, while still being in the pandemic, were able to keep their spirits burning with ideas in constructing rooms for creativity. Moreover, BaliMakãrya is an entirely local creation which expands and embraces national, regional and international community.
We should be proud as BaliMakãrya Film Festival is an event that gives opportunity to everybody, namely of the younger generation, who are interested to immerse themselves in the world of arts, especially films, and to develop their potential and talents. I hope that the festival would also bring beneficial impact to the development and advancement of Bali’s economy and tourism affected by the pandemic.
I believe that it is very attainable as BaliMakãrya Film Festival provide rooms for people to explore Bali audi-visual cultures as a base for the development of Bali film industry that will expands in the future.
Therefore, I warmly welcome the hosting of BaliMakãrya Film Festival 2022. But do remember that the pandemic is not yet over and that we still need to abide by the health protocol whenever and wherever we are.

BaliMakãrya Film Festival is our collective goal in creating a discussion forum on film, especially in South-East Asia. But for all members of the festival committee, the festival is our longing for meeting and sharing of the thing that is very dear to us: film.
This festival puts film as its heart, but it also intertwines with music, literature, and theater. True to its name, BaliMakãrya Film Festival is held in Bali, a place that represents our hope that the creative energy in Bali would fill our common imagination recesses.
In this perspective, Bali is beyond a mere background. Bali and its artistry community is the essence of this festival.
BaliMakãrya Film Festival is a dream of making Bali as an international meeting point for film festival, especially for South-East Asia region. The dream serves also as the response to our timid recovery from the grip of pandemic. The pandemic has altered many parts in our social order but at the same time, it is also a moment of “mulat sarira” [to see one own self] if we refer to the Balinese Hindu philosophical principal; a moment of self-reflection as a way to search for inspiration in strengthening the community through arts.
We’d like to convey our thanks to the Director General of Culture, Ministry of Education and Culture Republic of Indonesia, Mr. Hilmar Farid, for his faith in our aspiration and vision that we infused in this festival.
Our gratitude to the Governor or Bali Province, Mr. Dr. Ir. Wayan Coster, MM, who has given his esteemed blessing for us to run this event.
The cinema in this festival is an event of exchanges of the latest ideas in culture, values, social contexts that are arising in the South-East Asia, aimed to discover the potential in younger generation.
Films are artforms that can bring people close together through experiences that are cinematically framed and are empowered to build civilization.

BaliMakãrya Film Festival arose amidst a crises, when the world was having a pandemic. It was an endeavor necessary to give strength to the national film ecosystem and to boost the Indonesian film industry which was maturing. The reach of BaliMakãrya Film Festival that covers South-East Asia and parts of the world stand as proof to the earnestness of our film community in strengthening our film ecosystem in the world.
Amongst the many domestic or international film festivals, BaliMakãrya Film Festival is hoped to contribute to the progression and development of not only the film industry but also cultures. The advance in digital and information technology has enriched our experience of visual cultures, as shown by the fast development of film as prominent cultures and arts representative. Film has become the most livid and liked communication medium, favored by people of all walks of life and ages.
BaliMakãrya Film Festival is therefore expected to become an arena of celebration that would rouse the potential especially in the younger generation to appreciate and to create films. The festival that is born from local dynamics stands above the foundation of the richness of our cultural history, to discover and to empower. Bali definitely has abundance of capitals for the creation of films, such as literature, arts, dances, music, theater, and other forms of artistry. And it is very much justifiable for the BaliMakãrya Film Festival to bring forward the vision of making Bali as the center of international film festivals, considering the island’s wealth in breathtaking visual, its people hospitality, and the readiness of infrastructures.
One of the challenges faced by film festivals anywhere is to make a distinction through their programs design that make the festivals a magnet for films enthusiasts and arts communities. By having its uniqueness, the festival is hoped to run well and everlasting.
BaliMakãrya Film Festival is presenting two majors programs: film screenings and competitions especially for films made by emerging film directors during the whole festival and offering various interactive medium beyond cinema.
We hope that these programs would give BaliMakãrya Film Festival its distinction to entice film community and enthusiast in Indonesia and the world.
